In defense of kitchen table

"A thousand years from now, archeologists sifting through the rubble will be able to identify early 21st-century homes by their kitchens. The kitchen island will be as recognizable an artifact as the Doric column." Michelle Slatalla

I am thrilled to come across this fascinating article about a kitchen island, the eyesore of the modern American kitchen ('a hulking Brutalist monolith') and something I struggle with tremendously. I, just like the author, have sweet memories of sitting at the kitchen table with my mom and family, assembling appetizers, carving linzer and gingerbread Christmas cookies - before the world turned it into something that looks vaguely like a sports bar. It is really interesting to reflect on decades of American affluence and an increase in the average American home size. I have high hopes and desires to return to a time where we want less rather than more. Are the decades filled with consumption and a race to have more over? Are we ready to step into the light and see beauty and function in a smaller kitchen?

Remodelista - Why kitchen islands are ruining America's kitchens

Dining table in a place of a kitchen island
Still an open concept floor plan but without a kitchen island. I love the lightness of the space

Although the space could accommodate a kitchen island, the homeowners chose a work table.
